OUR COUNTRY AND US............

Sometimes I wish I had a passport from a different country, sometimes I ask myself why I was born into the black race, what happened to the curly hair, not good for my colour, I don’t know. Never for once in my entire life have I gotten a response to my questions.

I wake up every morning to join the rat race again hoping that one day it would get better, I grew up with that phrase “Someday things would get better”, but it doesn’t seem like it and I am yet to see the silver-lining, no light at the end of the tunnel, even my small generator cannot give me the hope

I open my window every other day and I look around me, all I can see is the evil we do to ourselves, I sometimes want to blame it on the leaders but when I meet people who are not leaders then I understand why we might never have that happy ending.

The average man on the street even in his wretchedness is all out for himself, thinking of how to make life better even at the expense of the other man, the landlords milk us of our earnings, the artisans short-change us to maximize gains, the market woman would ask for her share at the slightest increase in minimum wage and we are yet to reference our brothers who lurk in the dark corners of the night.

It’s a rotten system and nothing seems to work, the Police, the defender of our revered law have left us to the mercy of stray bullets, accidental discharge they call it. The judiciary that is supposed to uphold the law has been perforated by bribery and corruption and even the lawmakers themselves would stop at nothing to manipulate the laws they create for their selfish gains. My country is the only place in the world, where we seek interpretations to a court ruling just to delay justice.

Never mind my supposed lack of believe in my colour or my country, deep inside of me my heart constantly goes out to my country, I love the fact I am black, no other race could have been more fortunate but yet we are light years behind them all.

I need not go into deeper details of how terrible the state of this country is, we all know how bad it is already and a reminder would not move us forward but keep us stagnant with no way out of our turmoil, but it would gladden my heart if we can come together and do our little bits to make it better.
In the world of computing, it is the bits that make up the megabytes; for a traveller, it is the first step that gets him closer to his destination; no matter how long it takes, the tiny drops from a tap would fill the big bowl eventually only if it is not closed.

Let us be better citizens, close a running tap, don’t cross a lawn, obey traffic rules, don’t shunt a queue, help a destitute when you can, bless the country in your heart, pray for the peace of the country and put our leaders in your prayers; even a mad man can still come back to his senses.

It all starts with revolution, not a bloody one but a new way of thinking, a still but small voice in our hearts that tells us what is right from what is wrong, that shows us the way to a form of higher living, way high above the rots of life and shields us away from greed and corruption.

When we do this, we will be amazed at the results that would spring forth, a better society with less evil and a place we would all be proud to live and die for…..

I am a Nigerian and would always be proud to be one; never for once will I lose faith in the future of this great nation…

God bless Nigeria…………….

  1. Brilliant post, Osho! I'm proud of your delivery.

The man who said "our leaders serve us right" wasn't sinile afterall! We make our leaders - who in turn make us suffer!

"It is not what your country can do for you - but what you can do for her". Until we shift the focus from self/"now" to others/posterity (Communitarialism), that vicious circle of greed, corruption and the associated penury will only get larger!!!

    God bless Nigeria!!!

  2. Tolu, it's been five years... Still very apt... The revolution we seek might not happen in our lifetime.
